Sports Massage

What is it?
This is a type of massage aimed at improving the body’s function so that athletes and those of you who are physically active can train and compete at their highest level.

Who is it for?
Sports massage isn’t just for the elite. It’s for all athletes of any ability and at any stage of their training programme. It is also great for people who have a specific injury whether they gained that through work or sport, or for people with a physically demanding job.

At Premium Performance we focus on 4 main principles:

Prevention
Injury prevention is crucial if you’re training for a big race or competition or rely on being fit for your job. Reaching a vital point in your training programme only to pull a muscle can potentially cause problems reaching to the end goal, or being unable to work can have a significant impact on your life. We want to minimise your chances by providing you with excellent care.

Performance
Performing at your best means you can get more out of your training sessions. Massage can help pre-competition by stimulating blood flow and but is equally important to keep yourself working smoothly. Think of it as a body MOT.

Recovery
We understand that sustaining an injury is hard. Knowing you’re going to be in pain and have to make that journey to recovery can be a daunting notion. This is why we’re here to support you and help you get back to your original strength and mobility. Massage can help reduce recovery time.

Rehabilitation
With a background in sport and clinical rehabilitation, we can help decrease the risk of recurrence with advice on stretching and exercises. This will enable you to gain strength and confidence in your newly healed body as well as act as aftercare for your injury.

What will happen on my first visit?
The first appointment will start with a consultation where we will take your personal details and ask you a few questions about your general health, medical history, exercise and injury/reason for visiting us.

Then you will be asked to undress to a certain point depend on your injury. For example, for leg pain we may only need you to undress the lower half of your body to your underwear or change into a pair of shorts. We recommend bringing a pair of small short with you to your appointment because it is sometimes necessary to examine your movement during the consultation part of the appointment.

For a pre- or post-marathon treatment we made need to provide you with a full body massage. For this it’s best to undress completely or to your underwear, whichever you feel comfortable to do, and the towel will be draped over to cover your modesty. Your therapist will advise you on what’s best during the consultation stage.

Your therapist will leave the room while you undress and not re-enter the room without knocking to check you are ready. Then the treatment will start.

A treatment plan will also be agreed with you based on what your goals are, and towards the end of your treatment plan stretching and strengthening exercises may be advised, if appropriate, enabling you to continue training and competing at your best.
